Deadly Rooms of Death: Architects' Edition is a superb – and free – updated remake of the maddeningly addictive Deadly Rooms of Death (aka DROD).

DROD: Architects' edition is the updated version of Caravel Software's Deadly Rooms of Death. The game itself is identical, but has one major improvement – a level editor (Hence Architects' Edition). So in addition to delving through the 25 levels of King Dugan's Dungeon that were first introduced in Webfoot's original version of DROD, you can build your own dungeons (or “holds”), and play other people's creations. Architects' Edition also adds support for multiple players on the same installation, so your savegames are kept independent from anyone else's, and many other small improvements.

This new 2003 version includes all the levels from the original game, plus many new features including: the ability to restore a game from any point you have already been to, at any checkpoint you have stepped on in the room; new SVGA graphics; new sounds; the ability to record and replay demos. And last but not least – a level editor you can use to make your own levels!

DROD: Architects' Edition is the version of DROD to play if you have never seen it, and fans of the original will still appreciate the polished new features that make the game look and sound better than ever before. The restore option alone should help restore your sanity while you are playing this devious underdog. Simply put – this is a must-have if you like puzzle games. Since the game is now open source, keep an eye on the Sourceforge development site for new versions in the future. Two thumbs up, way, way up!

Learning how to play is simple – you move Beethro in one of eight directions or rotate his sword clockwise or counter-clockwise. Examine a detailed overhead view of an underground room, and plan Beethro's movements with care, always keeping his sword between him and the critters. You can wait as long as you like before moving, and logical problem-solving is paramount, but the game still has a sense of action as you lay waste to hordes of nasties. Each room of the dungeon is a handcrafted challenge for you to complete, with chambers and corridors purposefully designed to befuddle.

In DROD: Architects' Edition you will find numerous game elements, some of which you've never seen in any other game. There is a huge amount of exploration in wait for you, but if you should complete Dugan's Dungeon or would simply like a break from it, you can also try your hand at architecting your own dungeons with the new level editor.

DROD has been praised by many for its originality, and has enjoyed a growing cult following since 1997. If you've never played the game, well... you just have to! If you've already seen it, check out the latest incarnation of this classic puzzler. This is a from-scratch rewrite of the original with years of work put into it by several developers.
