The Hobbit is a Action game.
The Prelude To The Lord Of The Rings.
Set in the mythical world of Middle-earth, The Hobbit is an action adventure game in which the player assumes the role of Bilbo Baggins. The player will control Bilbo from his peaceful Hobbit hole in Hobbiton into the dark and harrowing Mirkwood forest and finally to the Lonely Mountain, in which lies Smaug the dragon. Sent on a journey by Gandalf the wizard along with Thorin the dwarf and his stout and sturdy cohorts, Bilbo will acquire items, knowledge, and in the case of a Hobbit, courage to help him complete the quest as he comes face to face with elves, trolls, orcs, spiders, wolves, and more.
Before Frodo, Sam, Legolas, and Aragorn made a splash in Middle Earth, there was Bilbo Baggins, first introduced in J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Hobbit. Bilbo was a younger hobbit once, but he wasn't the least bit heroic until he met a rather rude wizard. Gandalf invited a great many dwarfs to Bilbo's for breakfast, and it was then that adventure began to work its way into the halfling's life.
In the video game adaptation of Tolkien's classic book The Hobbit, players must get Bilbo all the way from The Shire to the dragon Smaug's lair... in one piece. Bilbo's path may start safely enough in rustic Hobbiton, but many dangerous and troublesome places will challenge him along the way.
The 3D world of The Hobbit is colorful, detailed and nicely animated. Game play involves platform-style action, simple combat using Bilbo's magical sword Sting or thrown rocks, plenty of sneaking around, a healthy dose of puzzle-solving, and opportunities for RPG-style character growth. This game, like Hobbiton itself, is generally carefree and not too difficult to get around. It's merely a pleasure to take in the sights and sounds of Middle Earth, particularly critters such as goblins, trolls, and the infamous Gollum. Advanced gamers looking for a sophisticated challenge will not find it in The Hobbit, and hardcore Tolkien fans may be miffed, but those who enjoy sightseeing in a lush fantasy world will be more than pleased.
Set in the world of Middle Earth, this detailed, one player fighting/strategy game follows the story of the Tolkien's The Hobbit novel and is best suited for children ages 10 and up. Players steer Bilbo Baggins through places like Mirkwood Forest and Lonely Mountain, battling trolls and collecting gems for courage and health. The graphics are cartoony (like Zelda), but this doesn't take away from the game. We tested the Game Cube version, and found it to be very rich, with eleven different areas to explore. Strengths include a design that is really easy to either zoom through, or take more time and explore. For example, in the first level, all you need to do is fix a bridge and find a walking stick, and you're done. But you can take much more time and explore if you want to.
The plot is revealed in cut-scene animations that appear after each section is completed. There are around a dozen in total and they feature many of the familiar settings from the book. The gameplay should also be familiar to anyone used to the action adventure/platform style of gaming as it follows all the rules of the genres. Bilbo has things to collect, such as coins (which can be used to buy needed potions and supplies) and Courage Points that appear as glowing crystals. Building up his courage meter will lead to a new unit of health being gained, which could serve him well in some of the more difficult combat sections.
Each mission begins with only a couple of tasks to complete but as Bilbo encounters and speaks to more of the inhabitants and characters, more missions are given to him. In fact his quest book can seem pretty packed at times… These tasks can be as simple as moving a butter churn, finding a hammer and some nails or locating a lost needle, but they do get quite tricky later. However, these puzzle solving, item collecting stages are nicely balanced by a good sprinkling of stealth and combat stages and the characters you’ll encounter vary from the gently Hobbits to vicious Orcs, ferocious Goblins to the mighty Dragon, Smaug…!
