Blades of Vengeance screenshots:
The evil Dark Lady has unleashed an onslaught of barbarians and beasts upon the land, and it's your duty to come face-to-face with all that she can throw at you in an attempt to protect your homeland. In Blades of Vengeance, you can choose your gladiator from three different classes: Huntress, Warrior, or Sorcerer. Each character has its own special powers and abilities, so you'll have to decide which one best fits your fighting style, and then get ready for the fight of your life! Along with your standard weapons, battle-axe, rapier, mace, crossbow, and fireball, you can also make yourself invincible with special armor and weapons that are strewn about each of the eight levels. If you've got the strength and courage to defeat all eight of the bosses, then you'll have a shot at the Dark Lady, are you ready?
The warrior spirits you pick to go through the 2D platform game with are average from the start so naturally, progressing through the game will make your character stronger and able to defeat stronger enemies more quickly. At the end of all but the last stage, your character can buy items from a weapons stock with pieces of silver that you acquire from finding hidden chests and defeating enemies. The game has plenty of secret areas and hidden chests. Finding them proves to be difficult but the rewards are always worth it.
During 2 players mode, if player 'A' pauses their character, then player 'B' is free to continue venturing through the stage. If player 'A' wants to get back into the game, all player 'B' needs to do is pause their character then 'A' can unpauses their character which will take the screen back to player 'A'. An ingenius system indeed! This adds tremendously to the co-operation of both players.
The characters and enemies throughout game are very well drawn with great detail and color. Even the accessories they carry (swords, clubs, tridents, etc.) are done very well. Even more impressive are the character and enemy animations. Walking, running, jumping, etc. are done very well with no sliding images. The backgrounds are remarkably constructed. From lava pits to castle rooftops, BoV doesn't disappoint. Every single stage has very detailed backdrops. The sounds are clear and plentiful on this game. Knocking open an item chest is very distinct and the sound itself even suggests the goodies within. Other sounds include sword and axe swings, explosions and buzz saws. All being very distinct and clear. The music fits each stage very well although a few tunes are recycled in later stages. The very first stage's music is seriously addictive. The tunes also add to the feel of each stage; for example the dungeon music is hinting largely on uncertainty which is common for the dungeon stage since you are uncertain most of the time that your next move could be your last.
